This painting is titled “The Power of the Gospel” and was produced in 1862 by the Alsatian-American immigrant artist, Christian Schussele (1824–1879). It depicts the Moravian (Herrnhuter) missionary David Zeisberger (1721–1808) evangelizing among Native Americans. Born in Europe, Zeisberger lived most of his life among various Indian groups, mainly in Pennsylvania and Ohio. His extensive writings on Native cultures and languages, several of which he spoke fluently, remain invaluable sources of information for scholars today.
