Translation and the German-American Experience: Historical Letter Collections

This event has passed.

@ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Speaker(s):

Viktorija Bilić

Location:

Union South, UW–Madison

Description:

Historical letters are a valuable source of information on the American immigrant experience. However, letters written in German and other immigrant languages are only accessible to those readers who speak the languages today. This lecture considers the interdisciplinary nature of translation studies and discusses translation challenges, the translation process, and translation strategies relevant in historical translation. The personal correspondence of Mathilde Franziska Anneke will serve as an example.

Viktorija Bilić is an Assistant Professor of German, Translation and Interpreting Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
