Step back into Wisconsin’s Low-German past!
On March 24, 2020, the Max Kade Institute will showcase the life and work of Albert F. W. Grimm. Join us for a fun evening with short presentations, readings (with translations), and musical selections featuring Max Kade Institute Director Mark L. Louden and Friends of the Max Kade Institute Board Members William E. Petig (Stanford University), and Don Zamzow (Pommerscher Verein Central Wisconsin).
Born in 1864 in Petershagen, Pomerania, Albert F. W. Grimm was a pastor in Antigo, Wisconsin. He also was a prolific author of novels, short stories, plays, and recitations, as well as a composer and arranger of vocal and instrumental music. Grimm’s writings in German and Low German dialect, often under the pen name Alfred Ira, uniquely depict life in the German-immigrant communities of Northern Wisconsin. To publish his works, Alfred Grimm founded the Antigo Publishing Company. He died in 1922 at the age of 59.
