Friedrich Karl Castelhun was born February 27,
1828, in Nordheim near Worms in Hesse. He came with his parents to Illinois in 1847. After graduating from the University of Michigan’s medical school in 1852, he studied in Würzburg, Vienna, Prague, and Berlin. Castelhun practiced medicine and wrote poetry in St. Louis and San Francisco. He died November 1, 1905, in San Francisco.
