Asmus Frederick Lorenzen, 1861-1921

Asmus Frederick Lorenzen was born on May 31, 1861 at Traasbuell, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. He immigrated to the United States, arriving in New York on June 26, 1883. After moving to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, Fred (as he was known) taught at the Eighth Street Lutheran School (now Peace Lutheran School). On November 10, 1887, Fred married Bertha Helwig, who was born in Posen, Germany in July 1865. Bertha immigrated to the US with her parents, Edward and Anna Helwig, in 1869. The couple’s eldest son Edwin J. and an unnamed girl were born in Oshkosh. After briefly returning to Germany, the family came again to America in 1891, moving to Detroit, Michigan, where Fred was a teacher in a Lutheran school. Three daughters were born here: Edna, Ella (died in infancy), and Ruth. They returned to Oshkosh about 1904 and Fred again was a teacher at the Lutheran School. He died in Oshkosh in 1921 and is buried at Peace Lutheran Cemetery. Bertha died in Oshkosh in 1954.
