One of America’s most familiar yet widely misunderstood religious groups are the Old Order Amish. This presentation will address central aspects of Amish life and the Christian faith that anchors it, with a special emphasis on Amish communities in Wisconsin, which has the fourth-largest population of any US state.
Mark L. Louden is a professor of German and the director of the Max Kade Institute for German-American Studies at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. A Mennonite and fluent speaker of Pennsylvania Dutch, most of his research and outreach center on the language and the various groups that speak it. He is the author of Pennsylvania Dutch: The Story of an American Language, which was published in 2016.
