Periodicals and Panoramas: Media Production and Commemorating the American Civil War
Join us for a fascinating presentation about nineteenth century panoramas, a medium usually associated with the staging of spectacular national historical narratives. Prof. Byrd investigates these massive displays as media production networks involving immigration, capital, and material flows from around the world. In particular, he examines how coverage of the American Civil War and the Franco-Prussian War in German illustrated periodicals informed Friedrich Wilhelm Heine’s panorama paintings in the United States.
Vance Byrd is Associate Professor and Chair of the German Department at Grinnell College.
