Images from a Guidebook to the English Language for German-Speaking Immigrants

This Amerikanischer Dolmetscher, der unfehlbare Rathgeber für Einwanderer und Eingewanderte was published by the Philadelphia Demokrat Publishing Company probably in the 1880s or early 1890s.
Aiming to help the German-speaking immigrant learn the English language without the help of a teacher, this guidebook includes basic grammar and a guide to pronunciation. Words and useful phrases are given in German and then English, with a phonetic aid to pronouncing the English words. For example, der Abend, “evening” in English, is to be pronounced “ihw’ning” by speakers of German. Also included are examples of various forms of letters for both social and business occasions in both languages, an English-German/German- English dictionary, forms of address, the states and their capitals, postal rates, and information on attaining U.S. citizenship.
